It's my Dad's birthday today. He's turning 63. That just made me think a lot about time, and how fleeting our lives really are. I mean James 4 talks very plainly about our short lives- "What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes." James 4:14. As I was making his birthday cake, I definitely had a moment. I was listening to Phil Wickham's Heaven Song, and for real started crying. People who know me know that I often do cry a lot, but even this was abnormal for me. I had completely missed it. Again. Ever since I became a Christian, I knew that I was supposed to be living my life completely for Jesus. But what does that even mean? How can one actually do that? Even Christians today fall into the trap of working toward something other than Jesus. It's real. It happens. In college we work for grades, friends, relationships, even ministry can becoming something we are working toward. Once we get out of college, some of us work toward marriage and having a family, and others work for promotions and more money. We've all missed it. Our lives are so short. God didn't have to create us. But out of the fullness of His being, because He wanted to create something He could love, He made us. Our lives are always going to be missing that one thing. Oh, if I could just date this person, my life would be so much better. If my ministry would just be a little bit more successful (whatever that means) I would have so much more peace. If I hadn't have slept through this quarter, my grades might just be a little bit better. No! We need to stop doing this to ourselves. Our one true purpose in life is to worship the Holy Creator God who made us. No matter where we are, who we are with, or how much we wish our lives tasted just a little bit sweeter. Then we might actually know what Paul is talking about when he says, "I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation." Philippians 4:11. Folks, those of us who know Jesus have access to 100% peace by the guaranteed Holy Spirit. Our lives have purpose. Worship the Father. Love others. Live in Peace. Everything else is just icing on the cake.
